Former Volts appointed Otago Selectors

Former Otago Volts and NZ XI all-rounder Sam Wells and former Otago Volts top order batsman Josh Tasman Jones have been appointed to the roles of Otago Volts Convenor of Selectors and Otago Selector, respectively for the 2022-2023 domestic season. Wells takes over the position vacated by Steve Martin who is now GM Performance for Otago Cricket. Tasman Jones will carry out a role previously undertaken by captain Hamish Rutherford.

The Convenor of Selectors role primarily involves management of the selection process for the Otago Volts whilst the Selector role will also involve selection management for Otago Zappers (Otago A) in alignment with Otago Volts.

Wells, a Solicitor, played 63 First Class and 43 List A matches for Otago and a further 37 T20 matches between 2007 and 2017 and was still playing premier club cricket last season.

Coach Dion Ebrahim, who completes the three-man selection panel, believes that Sam and Josh’s knowledge and expertise across club cricket and domestic will be valuable in the selection process. “Since 2019 Sam has been a selector for the Otago Men’s A team. Both men understand domestic cricket and the process of selection. I am looking forward to working closely with both Sam and Josh over the coming campaigns”.

Wells himself is delighted to move into the role and give back to a province and Association he has had a long involvement with. “Otago Cricket has given me a lot and this opportunity provides me with a chance to give back to the game that I love. I believe that I can support Dion and the team with managing a robust selection process”.

Tasman-Jones played 7 First Class games and 8 Super Smash games for Otago between 2016/17 and 2021/22 and was a regular performer for the Otago A team that he also captained.
